NM Health Officials Reports 2,209 New COVID-19 Cases

State also announces 26 additional deaths, including four from Santa Fe County

In the last report for 2021 and heading into another holiday weekend, New Mexico health officials today reported a surge of new COVID-19 cases: 2,209, a 61% increase from yesterday.

Bernalillo County had 791 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 259 and Santa Fe County with 184. Among Zip codes in the state, Santa Fe’s 87507 had the ninth highest number of new cases: 57.

The new cases bring New Mexico’s total case count to 350,043; DOH has designated 303,418 of those cases as recovered.

Cases have been surging nationally and globally, with daily seven-day rolling averages earlier this week exceeding previous records. For the week ending Dec. 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 58.6% of cases are attributed to the highly transmissible Omicron variant, but approximately 41% are the Delta variant strain. In New Mexico, the most recent Variants of Concern report tallies the number of sequenced cases with the Omicron variant at four (the state sequences a small portion of cases for sequencing).

Of those four cases, two were breakthrough infections (occurring among vaccinated people). All four were matched to specific people. While the first case, announced Dec. 12, took place in Bernalillo County, the report notes that Omicron cases will not be announced in specific counties until “a threshold of 10 patients have been reached to protect patient anonymity.”

For now, Delta remains the dominant variant in the state, although health officials say they expect that to shift in the future. Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center officials said earlier this week the majority of cases they are seeing in Santa Fe currently are, indeed, the Delta variant, but they also expect the Omicron variant to spread locally in the coming weeks and months.

The state’s seven-day test positivity rate also rose from 11.9 to 13.9%; the state target is 7.5%.

DOH today reported 26 additional deaths, 16 of them recent, including four from Santa Fe County: a male in his 50s from who had been hospitalized; a male in his 60s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions; a second male in his 60s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions; and a male in his 80s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions. Santa Fe County has now had 204 deaths; there have been 5,855.

As of today, 514 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 (43 more than yesterday).*

Currently, 88.8% of New Mexicans 18 years and older have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 75.8% are fully vaccinated. Among that age group, 34.7% have had a booster shot. In the 12-17-year-old age group, 66.7% of people have had at least one dose and 57.2% are fully inoculated. Among children ages 5-11, 27.5% have had at least one dose of the Pfizer vaccine and 16.2% are fully vaccinated. In Santa Fe County, 99% of people 18 and older have had at least one dose and 85.5% are fully vaccinated.
