New Mexico Reports 167 New COVID-19 Cases and Three Deaths

New report on variants of concern attributes one death to variant first discovered in California

Only one person has died from a COVID-19 variant of concern in New Mexico, according to a May 24 epidemiology case report.

That report attributes that death to the B.1.429 variant, discovered in California, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says has a 20% increased transmission rate. Overall, variants of concern, as defined by the CDC, have exhibited evidence of increased transmission rates, more severe disease and “a significant reduction in neutralization by antibodies generated during previous infection or vaccination, reduced effectiveness of treatments or vaccines, or diagnostic detection failures.”

In the case of B.1.429, the health department reports 173 cases, two of which resulted in hospitalization. Thus far, the B.1.1.7 variant, associated with the United Kingdom, accounts for the most cases: 373, 4% of which led to hospitalization. The state has had 96 cases with another California variant, B.1.427, with 3% requiring hospitalization and nine cases of P.1 (first detected in Brazil), from which only one person was hospitalized.

The report also provides a county-level breakdown for variants of concern. Santa Fe County has had 26 B.1.17 cases; eight B.1.427; 16 B.1.429 and no instances of P.1.

New Mexico health officials today reported 167 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 202,570. The health department has designated 188,333 of those cases as recovered.

Bernalillo County had 33 new cases, followed closely by the Torrance County Detention Facility, which added another 32 cases among federal inmates. Yesterday, 78 cases were reported at the facility, which now has a total of 157 cases. Doña Ana County had 21 cases today, followed by San Juan County with 19. Santa Fe County had 13, six from the Southside 87507 ZIP code, which ranked sixth in the state today for most new cases.

The state also announced three additional deaths, two recent and one from more than 30 days prior; DOH says some death certificates, required for COVID-related deaths—have been delayed due to insufficient information. There have now been 4,254 fatalities.

As of today, 130 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*

Currently, 64.4% of New Mexicans have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 54.2% are fully vaccinated. In Santa Fe County, 73.5% have had at least one dose and 62.5% are fully inoculated.
