Meow Wolf Forms PAC, Gets All Political

In a significant shift for Santa Fe's cultural collective Meow Wolf, Vince Kadlubek, one of the group's founders, today announced plans today to create WolfPAC, "a political action committee devoted to local political issues that affect the lives of young adult Santa Fe residents."---

Meow Wolf will no longer book shows—which this year included Purity Ring and Passion Pit—and will instead shift its focus to WolfPAC. The group has three key priorities, Kadlubek says:

1) Decriminalize marijuana in Santa Fe.

WolfPAC plans to publish a municipal petition soon and seek a resolution from the city council to allow residents to possess non-medical cannabis under one ounce. Santa Fe could lead the state with full legalization of marijuana, as recently happened in Colorado, and become a "safe haven," Kadlubek says.

2) Move Zozobra back to Fridays.

The Kiwanis Club, along with the mayor and city council, have made noises about this potential change, and WolfPAC already has a petition going (click here to sign it).

Santa Fe needs to turn Zozobra back into a "community gathering on the Plaza," restore "the spirit of celebration" and eliminate "reactionary feelings of fear," Kadlubek tells SFR.

3) Urge the Santa Fe City Council to help create a proper music venue.

WolfPAC is already in conversation with city councilors about these issues and will soon rally members to sign petitions, contact councilors, and then attend and speak at city council meetings.

After it gains some momentum, and builds a coalition of local young adults, WolfPAC hopes to tackle more issues at the municipal level, often through rapid response, and then register new voters, place items on the municipal ballot, and field or endorse candidates for the city council.

Meow Wolf has spent the last six months considering their next steps, and through a process of organic evolution reached the conclusion that the time had arrived for political involvement.

WolfPAC plans to gain practice and experience in local politics so that they will be ready for the next municipal election, which is scheduled for the first Tuesday of March 2014.

No political parties or elected officials are currently aligned with WolfPAC.

Meow Wolf has brought together young adults, artists, and professionals from Santa Fe and elsewhere since 2008, and hopes WolfPAC will draw members from similar social organizations who share a desire to shape Santa Fe's cultural identity.

According to Kadlubek, WolfPAC is attracting attention through social media, and several Santa Fe City Councilors have expressed excitement in seeing young adults getting involved in the political process. He says the group has met zero resistance so far.

Further information about WolfPAC is available on their Tumblr and Facebook accounts.

WolfPAC will register as a political action committee soon, likely with the city clerk, but does not plan to solicit monetary contributions until it is more established.
