Martinez initially had the salaries posted on the state's sunshine portal, but a 2nd Judicial District court judge ordered the removal of classified employees' names after protests from AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Unlike exempt employees, who serve at the discretion of the executive branch (and are generally supposed to be in "policy-making" positions), classified employees make up the bulk of the state's workforce. They serve the executive branch and are not exempt by law, meaning they sometimes endure a more competitive hiring process and often can be fired less readily.
