RIP, Rob DeWalt
This edition of The Fork comes with the sad news that its originator, longtime food and music journalist Rob DeWalt, died on April 5. DeWalt will be fondly remembered for his huge body of work in SFR, Pasatiempo and New Mexico Magazine.
En las Rocas
Drunken adventurers, unite! If you ever wanted to go bar-hopping around Santa Fe and sample the myriad margaritas that are available in the City Different, you're in luck—the Santa Fe Margarita Trail gets rolling May 5. With a specially issued passport in hand (courtesy of the Tourism Santa Fe office or a participating restaurant), marg mavens earn stamps and get a $1 discount on each margarita they purchase (maximum of two per day). The more stamps you get, the more prizes you earn. It's not like we needed an excuse to drink, but now we've got one!

After 30 years on Canyon Road as a hotspot for dining and drinking and dancing, David Salazar's historic El Farol restaurant is on the market. Among the reasons Salazar gave the New Mexican is "what's happening with the restaurant scene" in Santa Fe, where terrific restaurants that would thrive in bigger cities are having to fight "tooth and nail" for customers.
Eat Some Veggies, Will Ya?
As if we need more incentive to pay attention to what goes into our mouths, the World Health Organization now says the number of people living with diabetes has quadrupled since 1980, mirroring "the global increase in the number of people who are overweight or obese." WHO urges a leadership approach that considers the health impact of policies in trade, agriculture, finance, transport, education and urban planning.
And Speaking of That ...
There's nothing better than growing and eating your own veggies. Planting your own seeds and harvesting your own crops can be satisfying and healthy, but not everybody has the space to do it at home, especially if you live in an apartment. The good news is that the City of Santa Fe runs a series of community gardens that you can use for just $15. You have until May 20 to plant something, and you have to keep it planted all summer long. Just keep your hands off my kale.
Award-winning journalist and the author of SFR's "Total Pig column" Gwyneth Doland is filling in to help compile The Fork.
