Charges Filed in Fatal Crash: APD Officer 'Careless, Imprudent'

Crash involving Abq police officer killed 21-year-old Ashley Browder

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office today announced it has filed criminal charges against the Albuquerque police officer involved in a Feb. 10

---that killed 21-year-old Ashley Browder.

The complaint accuses Albuquerque Police Department Sgt. Adam Casaus of "Operat[ing] a motor vehicle [in a] careless imprudent manner." According to the complaint, which is signed by BCSO Officer Leonard R Armijo, Casaus "had his emergency lights activated" when he entered an intersection "on a solid red light."

Browder, according to the complaint, was traveling through the intersection "on a green light." Casaus' police vehicle, an SUV, T-boned her car, killing Browder and injuring her younger sister.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office issued the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

APD is currently under investigation for possible civil rights violations.
