Briefs, Oct. 21: “Educated in Energy Efficiency”

No Jobs After School

As a former adjunct instructor and neighbor, I wholeheartedly support SFCC and its Trades and Advanced Technology training program...But despite the overwhelming support SFCC receives (evidenced by the regular passage of bond initiatives), we are coming up short as a community in creating good paying jobs for its graduates.

Certainly there is local demand for medical and health care professionals (for which SFCC offers training), but we are missing the mark badly in creating green jobs. In effect, our investment in green trades professionals is getting into their cars and driving out of Santa Fe. We are training some other municipality's green workforce.

If the actual cost of training a workforce but not creating local jobs was accurately communicated to the public, there would be outrage at local and state leaders for failing to prioritize the economy for middle and working class people, especially those in entry-level positions. Without addressing the job creation needs for young people, SFCC will gradually morph into a center that provides continuing education for an aging Santa Fe population, potentially upstaging job training as an institutional priority.

Beautiful Spirits

Gaia Gardens was a beautiful and amazing contribution to this city. Shame on the mayor and all who do not have the courage to support this healthy effort to sustain humanity. I am sorry, Poki and Dominique, you are such heart-felt spirits. I wish you success wherever you are. I hope for our sake it's Santa Fe.

Feels Good to Give

As of today, Gaia Gardens has donated over 3,000 pounds of organic produce to the Food Depot. It feels really good to give back to a community that has loved and supported us for the past four years
