Canvas? Please. Encaustic? Overdone. On Friday, and through May 15, join Community Gallery as they present Pulp, a sui generis art exhibit that explores paper as a sculptural art form.
"We wanted to focus on paper as a medium itself instead of it being considered merely a surface for ink, paint and pencil work," the gallery's Rod Lambert tells SFR. "Paper is affordable, ubiquitous and flexible," he continues.
The results, at the hands of an impressive stable of artists 15 strong, are as varied as the material.
There's Victoria Rabinowe's manipulated quasi origami piece embellished with sumi ink, pieces that evoke a socio-political struggle like Cynthia Laureen Vogt's "Carte Blanche" and altered books depicting British royalty by Will Karp (pictured).
The exhibit, Lambert points out, also includes a series of free programs and lectures exalting paper's versatility.
"We thought it was important to feature its fragility and range of use," he explains. "Plus, there is a large group of local artists who utilize paper in their work."
