New Mexico Reports Record Daily New Cases of 2,112

The state also announced a record number of fatalities—28—and the youngest victim so far

New Mexico health officials today reported 2,112 new COVID-19 cases, another record high. There have now been 67,559 total cases, 26,338 of which the health department has designated as recovered.

Bernalillo County led with 615 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 338 and Santa Fe County with 141, also a record high here.

The state also announced 28 deaths in one day—another grim record—as well as the youngest victim so far: a pre-teen male (between the ages of 10 and 19) from Bernalillo County. There have now been 1,264 fatalities.

As of today, 754 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, using a new system of reporting that relies on daily data from hospitals throughout the state versus reports from case investigators and contact tracers.*

Today also marks the first day that public schools will now appear in the state environment department's daily watchlist for establishments with two or more rapid responses (there were none from Santa Fe County). While the environment department commences rapid responses when employees have COVID-19, the school also initiates them for students.

As of today, 250 spots appear on the watchlist, including 19 in Santa Fe County:

  • GM Emulsion
  • Jinja
  • Kohl’s
  • La Fonda on the Plaza
  • La Posada
  • Market Street
  • Netflix (The Harder They Fall, filmed at Garson Studios)
  • Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort
  • The Pantry Dos
  • The Pantry
  • Ranch House
  • Santa Fe Police Department
  • Smith’s Food & Drug (2308 Cerrillos Road)
  • State Employees Credit Union
  • Target
  • UPS Customer Center (2541 Ortiz)
  • Walmart
  • Walmart Supercenter

Of those Santa Fe spots, Ojo Santa Fe Spa, Smith's and Ranch House are listed as having had four rapid responses within 14 days, the criteria the state uses for closure. Currently, only Ranch House and Target (which previously had had four cases within 14 days) remain closed. According to an environment department news release, when a business had had that many, NMED refers them to the Department of Health, which evaluates and makes the closure decision.
