The Santa Fe Reporter’s newsroom earned accolades this weekend in the multi-state Top of the Rockies journalism awards in the medium-sized newsroom competition.

Judges recognized Anson Stevens-Bollen, art director, with first place in the Front Page Design category for his cover illustration “Full Inheritance,” noting, “the subtle detail of this beautiful drawing made it stand out.” The artwork accompanied a story about a new book by environmental ethicist Larry Rasmussen.

SFR Senior Correspondent Julia Goldberg earned first place in the Arts Criticism category for her reviews of the Santa Fe Opera’s 2022 season. “Writer Julia Goldberg makes opera interesting for both the aficionados and the novices. Her ability to intertwine history, perspective and commentary makes the columns compelling,” the judges wrote.

Goldberg also received second place in the Features, Short Form category for “Zozobra Brings Hella Crowd.”

Coverage of harassment accusations against state Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto, D-Albuquerque, and the tangle of secrecy rules in the Legislature’s ethics investigation process by Andy Lyman, staff writer, and Jeff Proctor, former news editor, earned first place in the News, Politics category. Lyman also won first place in the Religion Feature category for “A Vegas Gimel.”

A front-page feature on local chefs with shopping tips and recipes called “Stop, Shop and Cook” by Culture Editor Alex De Vore, Editor and Publisher Julie Ann Grimm and Riley Gardner, former culture writer, won first place in the Features, Long Form.

The Top of the Rockies contest has been administered for more than a decade by the Colorado Professional Chapter and is open to professional journalists in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming. This year saw more than 1,750 entries from more than 100 news media outlets and freelancers. See a full list of winners here.
