New Mexico Reports 96 New COVID-19 Cases

Over the weekend, the state added 369 new cases and had four more deaths

New Mexico health officials today reported 96 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 192,595. The health department has designated 174,339 of those cases as recovered.

DOH also reported 369 cases from the holiday weekend: 170 on Saturday and 199 on Sunday.

Bernalillo County had 49 new cases today, followed by San Juan County with 10 and Doña Ana County with nine. Santa Fe County had three new cases today. Individual counts for counties from the weekend had not been provided by press time today.

While the state said there were no additional deaths today, four were reported over the weekend, including one from Santa Fe County: a woman in her 80s who was a resident of the BeeHive Homes Edgewood facility. There have now been 143 deaths in Santa Fe County and 3,953 statewide.

As of today, 85 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*

Currently, 47.9% of New Mexicans have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 25.6% are fully vaccinated, according to the state's vaccine dashboard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has higher figures that indicate the state has provided vaccines to half of its residents, which has earned New Mexico national recognition in the last few days. Health Department Communications Director Matt Bieber says the CDC's higher figures are because "…it gets federal agencies' vaccine administration totals a little faster than we do."

According to state data, in Santa Fe County, just over 48% of residents have had at least one dose and 28.9% are fully inoculated. Those percentages put Santa Fe County toward the top—11th—for partial vaccinations, with Roosevelt County ranking last at 25.60% and Los Alamos County leading with 59.3%. Close to 20 counties, however, are at or above 40% for partial doses.

For full inoculation, Santa Fe County comes in at 18th. In Torrance County, just 13.5% of residents are fully inoculated, while Guadalupe County leads at 44.7%. In this case, 20 counties, at least as of press time, had under 30% of residents fully vaccinated. Those numbers are likely to increase. As of today, all New Mexicans 16 years and older are eligible for a vaccine and, last week, the health department announced residents who have received an initial dose can now schedule their own booster shots. A health department news release says the "CDC has indicated that states should expect meaningful increases in vaccine supply over the coming weeks."
