New Mexico health officials today reported 314 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 183,335. The health department has designated 135,608 of those cases as recovered.

Today's new cases fall just above the middle-case scenario for projected cases, based on this week's COVID-19 modeling report.

Bernalillo County had 111 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 47 and Sandoval County with 24. Santa Fe County had 10 cases today.

Tomorrow, the health department will update counties under the state's red-to-green public health order, assessing test positivity and case rates over the last 14 days. Santa Fe County, which turned yellow on Feb. 10, appears to be on track to easily remain yellow for test positivity (based on SFR's napkin math), but its case count over the last 14 days would indicate we are not quite poised to turn green.

Under the public health framework, counties are evaluated every other week for their case and test positivity rates over the course of 14 days. Two benchmarks come into play. For cases, counties must have fewer than eight cases per 100,000 people over 14 days. For test positivity rates, counties must average of 5% or less during the same time period.

For cases, Santa Fe County would have had to have 168 or fewer cases over the last 14 days and, instead, had logged 205 cases as of today, at least based on the daily raw data (we're happy to be wrong).

Test positivity rates require dividing the number of positive tests reported over the 14-day time period by the number of tests administered overall. As of two weeks ago, Santa Fe County had a test positivity rate of 4.22%. Based on a look at Santa Fe County's historical testing data, 9,694 tests were run here between Feb. 9 and Feb. 22, with 195 positive results. Keeping in mind that those figures may, in fact, include some duplicates, Santa Fe County's test positivity rate would appear to have decreased to around 2%.

The state also announced nine additional deaths, also the middle-case scenario from this week's modeling report. As of now, there have been 3,644 fatalities statewide.

As of today, 261 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
