New Mexico Reports 541 New COVID-19 Cases and 18 More Deaths

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham Heads to White House to discuss COVID-19 relief

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham left New Mexico today for the first time since the pandemic began and headed to Washington, DC for a COVID-19 meeting with governors and mayors at the White House.

President Joe Biden's press secretary, Jen Psaki, announced the meeting yesterday during a press briefing, saying Biden will be meeting with the group to discuss the American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion relief package that includes a $20 billion national vaccination program; $50 billion for expanded COVID-19 testing; $1,400 stimulus checks; and expanded surveillance programs to track COVID-19 variants, among other items.

According to a news release, the governor "plans to advocate for the proposed $350 billion in essential state and local aid and for continued increases in vaccine supply" to New Mexico. She returns late tomorrow.

Meanwhile, back at home, the state environment department today announced new online tools for New Mexico employers to report COVID-19 cases directly to the state within four hours as required and to complete the rapid response paperwork for those cases assigned to the environment department. The online forms will allow employers to bypass direct assistance from the department, except when needed. Employers can continue to report positive cases through this link. If the case is assigned to NMED (versus the education department or other agencies that oversee rapid responses), the employer will receive an email with a unique link to the new webform.

New Mexico health officials today reported 541 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 179,323; the health department has designated 116,518 of those as recovered.

Bernalillo County had 111 new cases, followed by Chaves County with 101 and Doña Ana County with 73. Santa Fe County had nine new case.

The state also reported 27 new cases among state inmates at the Lea County Correctional Facility and five new ones among state inmates at the Northwest New Mexico Correctional Center in Cibola County. There have now been 427 cases at Lea County facility, 122 at the Cibola prison and 2,610 overall among people held by the New Mexico Corrections Department.

The state also announced 18 additional deaths; there have now been 3,479 fatalities statewide.
