New Mexico health officials today reported 997 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 166,823. Of those, the health department has designated 91,096 as recovered.

Bernalillo County led with 232 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 125 and McKinley County with 92. Santa Fe County had 39 new cases today.

Case rates this week have tracked with forecasts from the weekly modeling report's middle case scenario, although daily numbers have steadily increased this week from a low of 628 on Monday.

And while the health department won't update counties for progress under its red-to-green assessment until Jan. 27, this week's epidemiology report shows some improvement for Santa Fe County in terms of daily case rates. On Jan. 13, Santa Fe County had 46.3 cases per 100,000 population—far above the county gating criteria of 8 per 100,000, which accompanies a target test positivity rate of 5% or less. In the most recent epidemiology report published Jan. 18, Santa Fe County has a daily case rate of 40.4 for Dec. 14 through Dec. 20.

The state also announced 35 additional deaths, including five more Santa Fe County residents: a woman in her 50s who was hospitalized; a woman in her 60s who had underlying conditions; a woman in her 80s who was hospitalized; a man in his 80s who had underlying conditions; and a man in his 90s who was a resident at Pacifica Senior Living facility in Santa Fe. There have now been 3,044 deaths statewide.

Today's number of deaths, like yesterday's, tracks close to the worst case forecasts from the weekly modeling report.

As of today, 644 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
