New Mexico health officials today reported 628 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 164,263, of which the health department has designated 87,502 as recovered.

Bernalillo County had 161 new cases, followed by San Juan County with 62 cases and Doña Ana County with 48. Santa Fe County had 38.

The health department today also reported the second COVID-19 case with B.1.1.7, a close household contact of the first case, which was reported Jan. 13. According to a news release, the second person with the variant is a woman in her 30s, who has experienced mild symptoms and has not required hospitalization. No additional close contacts outside of the household have been identified thus far.

While this new variant, which first emerged in the United Kingdom, does not appear to cause more severe illness, it does appear to be more transmissible.

Of those cases, 68 were reported to be in the Southside ZIP code of 87507, which ranked first both days of the weekend for the most new cases in the state. Today, it ranked seventh and accounted for 15 of Santa Fe County's 38 cases.

The state also announced 26 additional deaths today; there have now been 2,958 fatalities statewide.
