New Mexico health officials today reported 1,237 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 62,006.

The state also announced 22 more deaths, one shy of the highest number of deaths in a single day so far.

The new numbers arrived shortly after Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a new public health order, effective Monday, that puts in place stay-at-home orders, closes non-essential businesses and renews limits on capacity at those essential businesses that are allowed to continue operating.  The new order re-closes close-contact businesses such as salons and gyms; outdoor recreation facilities such as golf courses and tennis courts; as well as retail spaces, such as indoor malls. The governor's new order comes as numerous states clamp down to address case surges, although the New York Times reports New Mexico's new health order is "the most sweeping statewide order of the fall season."

The health order will be in effect for two weeks, through Nov. 30, at which time a three-tiered system for counties may allow some to start re-opening. The Public Education Department announced, shortly after the governor's news conference, that schools can't begin in hybrid mode during the two-week period, but those already allowing for some in-person learning may continue to do so.

Today, Bernalillo County had the highest number of new cases, 319, followed by Doña Ana County with 222 and Santa Fe County had the third highest number of cases: 133, one more than yesterday and another record high here.

The state also announced 22 additional deaths; there have now been 1,198 fatalities.

As of today, 455 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.* According to Human Services Secretary David Scrase, the state has been relying on contact tracing information to report hospitalizations, but will be transitioning to reporting them based on real-time data from hospitals next week.
