New Mexico Reports 797 New COVID-19 Cases

The state also announced seven more deaths

New Mexico continues to report high COVID-19 numbers: 797 new cases today, bringing the statewide total so far to 40,168.

Bernalillo County had 197 new cases, followed by Doña Ana County with 130. Santa Fe County had the third highest number of cases today with 56, bringing the county total to 1,546. Of those, more than half—872—have been in the southside 87507 ZIP code.

The Public Education Department reported 30 new cases—21 staff members and nine students—from public school districts in 11 counties.

The new numbers arrive as an amended and extended public health order takes effect through Nov. 13, which requires any business incurring four rapid responses within a 14-day period to close for two weeks and requires retail businesses to adhere to the 10 pm closing time already in effect for restaurants and bars. The state also has begun publishing a daily watchlist for businesses that have had more than two rapid responses in 14 days.

Under the new health order, restaurants wishing to provide indoor dining must complete the New Mexico Safe Certification training program by Oct. 30; agree to spot COVID-19 testing for employees; and retain contact information on customers for contact tracing for at least three weeks.

State museums and historical sites also have been closed.

The state also announced seven additional deaths from Bernalillo, Doña Ana, Eddy, Lincoln, Sandoval and San Juan counties; there have now been 960 fatalities.

As of today, 229 people are hospitalized with COVID-19—16 more than yesterday.* According to a state news release, 77% of general beds at New Mexico hospitals are occupied and 76% of ICU beds across New Mexico hospitals are occupied with both COVID-19 and non-COVID patients. In a news briefing yesterday, health officials said hospitals in Albuquerque all were moving into Phase 2 and Phase 3 surge plans
