New Mexico Reports Record-Breaking 488 New COVID-19 Cases

State also announces three additional deaths

New Mexico health officials today reported 488 new COVID-19 cases, New Mexico's highest case-count day prior to today was 467 cases on July 27. The state has now had a total of 32,241 cases so far,  of which the health department has designated 18,335 as recovered.

Today's new surge of cases follows urging by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Human Services Secretary David Scrase yesterday for New Mexicans to stay the course of mask wearing, social distancing and staying at home as much as possible. The governor's office issued an advisory encouraging New Mexicans to limit their daily travel outside the home to no more than three trips.

Bernalillo County has 135 new cases today, followed by Doña Ana County with 81 and Chaves County with 41. Santa Fe County had 19 new cases and has now had a total of 1,163 cases, of which the health department has designated 680 as recovered.

Santa Fe had 37 rapid responses for COVID-19 cases at workplaces between Monday and Thursday, according to data from the state Environment Department. These included ones at Santa Fe High School, Gonzales Community School, Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, Presbyterian Medical Center, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Dinner for Two, to name a handful. No rapid response reported more than one case per location, although some reports did not include any figures on the number of cases.

The state also announced three additional deaths from Chaves and Sandoval counties; there have now been 902 fatalities.

As of today, 133 people are hospitalized with COVID-19—14 more than yesterday.*
