New Mexico Reports 263 New COVID-19 Cases

The state also announced six more deaths today

New Mexico health officials today reported 263 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases thus far to 28,487.

Today's numbers continue the trend of rising case numbers (there were 239 new cases yesterday and 200 the day prior). The state's effective rate of transmission, which health officials earlier in the week said they were keeping an eye on, also has risen to 1.27 today—the gating criteria includes an optimum rate of 1.05 or less. The state is, however, meeting its other seven gating criteria.

Doña Ana County led with new cases: 54 of them, followed by Bernalillo County with 51 and Chaves County with 33. Santa Fe County had 10 new cases.

The Public Education Department also reported 14 new cases at schools in the last 24 hours at public schools in Bernalillo, Chaves, Curry, Doña Ana, Eddy and Los Alamos counties. Twelve of the cases involved staff members of either particular schools or districts; two of the cases involved students. The schools in Bernalillo, Doña Ana and Los Alamos counties are all in remote-learning mode.

The state also announced six more deaths from Bernalillo, Doña Ana, Roosevelt and San Juan counties; there have now been 865 fatalities.

As of today, 75 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*
