New Mexico COVID-19 Cases: 17,828

Health officials report 316 new cases and three more deaths; Santa Fe County has 19 new cases

New Mexico health officials today reported 316 new positive test cases for COVID-19, bringing the statewide total so far to 17,828, with 6,974 designated as recovered by the health department.

Bernalillo County continues to lead with high case numbers: 89 today, followed by Doña Ana County with 53 new cases and McKinley County with 35.

Santa Fe County has 19 new cases, bringing the total here to 456, 181 of which the health department has designated as recovered.

The state also announced three more deaths from Bernalillo and McKinley counties; there have now been 591 fatalities.

As of today, 178 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, 24 more than yesterday.*

The new figures follow yesterday's weekly state modeling report showing hospitalizations have increased since earlier this month, with the 55-64 year old age group making up the highest percentage of those hospitalizations. Meanwhile, ventilator use has decreased and is at 22%. While hospitalizations are declining in the Northwest regions, they are increasing in the Metro, Southwest, Southeast and Northeast regions. And though deaths have been decreasing since May, the latest report indicates they may increase given the recent spike of cases.

While the effective rate of transmission has decreased to 1.0 (statewide gating criteria sets 1.05 as the target), the northwest and metro regions continue to have increasing case counts.

The number of tests performed has increased across age groups over the last three weeks, particularly the 20 to 29-year-old. That age group, along with 30 to 39-year-olds continues to comprise the highest percentage of total cases.

Within those age groups, cases have increased among Hispanics since the start of June, but decreased among those categorized as American Indian or Alaska Natives.
