New Mexico COVID-19 Cases: 16,138

Health officials report 300 new cases, five more deaths

New Mexico health officials today reported 300 new positive test results for COVID-19—now the third highest day of new cases—bringing the statewide total thus far to 16,138, of which 6,578 have been designated as recovered by the health department.

Bernalillo County continues to report the highest number of new cases statewide: 103 today. Doña Ana and Lea counties, which have both had growing caseloads, had 39 and 23, respectively.

After a record-high number of cases yesterday (29), Santa Fe County today had nine new cases. That brings the total here so far to 389, out of which the health department has designated 163 as recovered. Close to 27,000 tests (26,998 to be exact) have been administered in Santa Fe County all together.

The state also announced five new deaths from Bernalillo, Cibola, McKinley and San Juan counties. There have been 562 fatalities.

As of today, 170 people are hospitalized with COVID-19.*

The state came close this week to meeting its targeted 1.05 effective rate of transmission at 1.08, although the northeast sector (of which Santa Fe is part) was at 1.39, according to the most recent graphs of spread across New Mexico health department regions.

The most recent updates for the state's gating criteria—used to evaluate readiness for economic and other re-openings—also show the state lagging in its targets for contact tracing. The state's medical advisory team has set 24 hours or less as the time to isolate and quarantine people testing positive for COVID-19. As of the most recent report, it's been taking 53 hours. Officials also aim to notify people who have had contact with people testing positive within 36 hours; it has been taking 78 hours.
