Over the weekend, New Mexico health officials reported 324 new positive test results for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases thus far to 6,943.

Health officials reported 175 new cases on Saturday and 149 on Sunday.

As of today, 213 people are hospitalized and the health department has designated 2,464 COVID-19 cases as recovered.

The state also announced 15 new deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities to 317.  Six deaths were reported on Saturday and nine deaths were reported on Sunday.

McKinley and San Juan counties continued to see the largest number of new cases over the weekend, with 108 and 65, respectively. However, Doña Ana County had 39 total new cases this weekend, as health officials eye the southern part of the state for spread of the virus. The number of people who tested positive and are being held by federal agencies at both the ICE Otero County Processing Center and Otero County Prison Facility also rose over the weekend with 26 new cases at the former and 12 new ones at the latter. There are now 142 cases combined at the two facilities.

To that end, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Health and Human Services Secretary David Scrase released a video message on Saturday warning that health officials “are seeing an alarming increase in #COVID19 cases in the southern part of the state, particularly along the Texas/New Mexico border.‬” Officials raised similar concerns last week during a news conference noting the rising cases in El Paso, Texas.

‪A message from Dr. David Scrase to southern New Mexico:‬ ‪We are seeing an alarming increase in #COVID19 cases in the southern part of the state, particularly along the Texas/New Mexico border.‬ ‪Especially this holiday weekend, please do your part to slow the spread of COVID-19 – stay home and don’t gather with others.‬
