New Mexico COVID-19 Cases: 4,291

Santa Fe County has its first death from the virus

New Mexico health officials announced 153 additional positive tests for COVID-19 today, bringing the state total to 4,291. The state also reported seven new fatalities, including the first for Santa Fe County: a 90-year-old woman who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. The other six fatalities were in McKinley and Bernalillo counties, and bring the total number to 169. All were either hospitalized, had underlying medical conditions or a combination therein.

The new cases follow yesterday's briefing by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and other state officials warning that ongoing social distancing and other measures must take place for New Mexico to lower the spread of the virus low enough to warrant the first phase of economic re-opening after May 15. New rules requiring masks for employees at restaurants serving take-out, along with large grocery and retail stores went into effect today. All employees working in essential retail spaces will be required to wear them starting May 11.

McKinley County had by far the most new cases today, 63, followed by San Juan County with 38. Both are in the northwestern part of the state, which has been struck by far the hardest by COVID-19, and remains under stricter rules than the rest of the state.

As of today, 193 people are hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19.* The health department has designated 1,073 cases as recovered.
