Season 3 Episode 4: From A Patient

Coronavirus in New Mexico now has a face: Santa Fe public defender offers grim warnings, stern critiques

On Wednesday, the Santa Fe Reporter’s contributing editor Jeff Proctor interviewed Jennifer Burrill, who has been a lawyer for the last sixteen years. She has been a public defender in Santa Fe since 2016. She is also infected with the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Her story of trying to get tested is one Americans all across the country are sharing: getting hung up on and brushed off, even when they have symptoms of the virus.

So far, officials from the Department of Health have not responded to Jeff's follow up questions about why that happens to anyone, let alone someone on the front lines of public service. New Mexico has tested more people per capita than many other states, but is still choosing some beneficiaries among others.
