Santa Fe New Mexican joins papers who fire comic strip

Anti-Trump F-bomb lands Non Sequitur on the no-fly list

Sunday's funny pages in Santa Fe this week were missing a comic strip that's caused a nationwide stir.

The New Mexican joined more than 40 other US newspapers in ending its longtime publication of "Non Sequitur" after artist Wiley Miller included a phrase that they deem inappropriate for breakfast tables—and that made it into more than 700 papers that carried the art on Feb. 10

In a coloring page featuring character Leonardo BearVinci, Miller penned "We fondly say … go fuck yourself, Mr. Trump." The afternoon before it was set to run,  Miller reportedly told Twitter users to watch for an "Easter Egg."

After a rebellion ensued, he claimed the copy made it to the final version in error. His Twitter account appears to have now been disabled.

The local newspaper printed an announcement on Feb. 15 explaining newsroom leaders had decided to pull the comic.

"The comics section is dear to many readers," reads a statement attributed to Editor Phill Casaus. "The decision to drop a comic is not made lightly, but it's one we have to make."

Like other papers including the Tacoma News Tribune and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the New Mexican is now running "Nancy" in its place. That strip kicked off in 1938 but underwent a recent revival at the hands of artist Olivia Jaimes.

Kinda fucked, huh?
