More on the Way

Winter storm warning for much of New Mexico from 6 am Thursday to 6 am Saturday

Kids are already out of school for winter break, but today would have no doubt been a snow day off in the City Different.

Several inches of powder that greeted Thursday morning will likely be joined by another layer of snow in the evening via a storm predicted to settle in for the early part of the weekend.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for snow and freezing fog to blow in from the west tonight, with gusts potentially reaching 50 to 60 mph. A winter storm warning is in effect from 6 pm Thursday to 6 am Saturday. Snow would get heavier by midnight and continue through Saturday with bitter cold temperatures that vary from 15 degrees to 15 below zero in the early mornings, the service says.  Accumulation estimates range from 4 inches to a foot.

Ski Santa Fe is reporting 9 new inches of snow overnight, and bracing for more. Already the resort has had more snowfall this season than all of last season combined.

The city's First Judicial District Courthouse opened several hours late Thursday on a two-hour delay after a water main broke early. No word on whether water service has been restored.

Meanwhile, Verizon wireless and internet customers including the City of Santa Fe are experiencing a service disruption in the region. A company press contact confirmed that engineers are working to fix the problem, but did not immediately say how many customers are affected, for how long or what has caused the disruption.

City spokesman Matt Ross said workers have also not had access to email for most of the day because another outage, this one from Century Link. Police spokesman Greg Gurule says the same problem is affecting email communication, but officers are still largely able to use radio and phone systems to respond to calls for service.
