Julia Goldberg
Ten Things About Julia Goldberg:
1. She's been editor of The Reporter since December, 2000, but her first job here was as an editorial intern in 1991. 2. She listens to a lot of hip hop and sometimes sings ganster rap really loudly in her car. (Also: She learned to drive in Santa Fe and, thus, does not drive very well). 3. She writes about herself a lot at her blog, hiphopvoterproject.blogspot.com. 4. One time she wrote a novel and called it her master's thesis at UNM. So they gave her a master's degree, which hangs on a wall with her bachelor's degree from St. John's College. One of those degrees took 10 years to pay off. 5. In lieu of vacations, Julia travels to various conferences hosted by the national Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, of which SFR is a member, and serves on the AAN board as its editorial chair (as well as on its diversity and membership committees). 6. Julia loves dogs, especially her own. 7. Julia says contests don't matter, but is secretly pleased about all the national and local awards SFR has won in the eight years she's been editor. 8. Julia has written for lots of other publications at one time or another, including salon.com, In These Times, not to mention The Rio Grande SUN, New Mexico Magazine, THE, Crosswinds, Pasatiempo and The Albuquerque Journal (this was a really long time ago). 9. Julia one time posted a poem that was a response to an ee cummings poem, which is now, inexplicably, all over the Internet. 10. Julia secretly sort of thinks vampires are real.
Stories by Julia Goldberg
Present Tense
In her most recent novel, The Year of the Flood, Margaret Atwood describes a future in which humanity has all but obliterated itself through scientific hubris and indifference to the environment. SFR spoke with Atwood by phone from her hotel room in Chicago.

Burning for You
A national inquiry got us wondering what sad stuff people will cast off this week when Old Man Gloom burns. So we called (and emailed) around and asked a few local folks if they would be willing to publicly share their glooms for the year.
Briefs: Aug. 5
Zozobra looms (digitally) and SFR counts votes by New Mexico's democratic delegation.
Agua Fria: What Lies Beneath
A frustrated caller last week prompted me to try and find out when construction on Agua Fria Street would end. In so doing, I discovered what I would have known already had I been paying attention: There’s a major archaeological excavation going on and, despite the inconvenience to drivers, it will likely result in a massive addition to our knowledge of the history of the village.
