Never has the word “eclectic” been so well embodied as it is at Counter Culture Café. The look of the restaurant is warehouse chic: exposed ceiling trusses, plywood walls in the bathroom, and knives and forks ominously teetering on a big industrial shelf. The food is as varied as the building materials. Every meal is hefty and generous, but not thoughtlessly so.

The haystack fries really do look like their namesake and more resemble strips of super-fresh potato chips than typical french fries. The grilled rainbow trout comes with sautéed kale, fried tomato and vegetables scattered around the plate. A burger special with brie, portabella and bacon comes stacked between two slices of no-nonsense focaccia, as filling and deranged as any mighty manburger ever put to grill. And the order/pay-at-the-counter setup means you can dash in for a quick bite or linger as long as you like over coffee (with a giant piece of chocolate cake, of course). (CJ)
