When the Sleeping Dog Tavern reopened in spring of 2007 following a remodel, we were initially unmoved by the menu. But a later tip-off to the brilliance of the banoffee pie has turned us into starry-eyed followers. The transformation has extended beyond the realm of mere renovation and is complete.

At Santa Fe's only gastropub, Chef Russell Thornton's menu is split thoughtfully between three categories: bar snacks, small plates for sharing and traditionally sized entrées. Salad lovers will find no spa food here, but they will find Santa Fe's finest excuse to eat blue cheese in the form of a wedge salad. This is Iceberg's finest moment, in which crisp leaves find redemption in apple-smoked bacon, ripe tomato and creamy Stilton dressing, and coolly bring the same bland relief that frosty milk does for a fudge brownie. Local range-fed organic ribeye steak frites with crazy horseradish butter and an optional shrimp accompaniment is superb, as are both mac and cheese dishes, though the dinner version, with lobster, is quite special. Both an Angus and a Kobe-style beef burger are offered here, with fried egg available as a topping. The richness on offer is so gratuitous, it's hard to know where to look first. (A Qasimi)
