Zane Bennett gallery brings you highbrow Magic Eye images. Artist Michael Freitas Wood uses super dense layers of grids to create a multi-stage visual experience. Wood’s style developed over time. Though he has long studied grids, Wood has radically changed their implementation and expression. Wood began using the classic brush, but moved to etched ones. He’s also switched from cloth canvas to fiberglass. This exhibition reveals these changes, and a viewer can see how he transforms the look and power of the underlying grid. Wood’s work takes time to unfold, a requirement that he intentionally holds against a contemporary viewer’s need for instant gratification. Wood says, “It requires the viewer to take time with the painting, but ultimately with themselves.”
