In The Time of The Butterflies

by Ryan Collett
7:30 pm, Mar 08, 2013 | $15; $12 seniors/students

During Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship in the Dominican Republic (arguably one of the bloodiest reigns ever) three sisters became martyrs for the uprising that led to the ruler’s overthrow. The story of Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal—from their well-educated upbringing to their revolutionary aspirations—has been well documented, and now, a play by Caridad Svich brings their plight to the stage. Based on the historical novel by Julia Álvarez, the stage version of In the Time of the Butterflies is bound for New York, but lucky Santa Feans can catch a production workshop here. Proceeds from the Saturday performance benefit the Esperanza Shelter and, just as importantly, the play itself takes a relevant stand for nonviolent peace revolutions.
