Luke Dorman’s “Super Store” recalls the work of Miranda July, who created a store called “It Chooses You” to promote her movie The Future. Dorman, however, brings more than dilettantism to his work, exploring the essence of desire and consumerism. The show asks you to face your motives for shopping by advertising those subconscious desires as the products. As the physical form becomes secondary to the motive, cereal is more likely to be advertised as “Satisfaction” or “Sanity.” Other items include “Good Karma,” “God-Given Talent,” “Clean Conscience” and “Big Fat Nothing,” among others. “Store patrons are able to purchase a representation of what, in real life, is unattainable by financial means,” Dorman says.
