Indie Rocks! with Lousy Robot, The Scrams and Suicide Lanes

by Alex De Vore
9 pm, Sep 17, 2010 | $5

As huge fans of the “three bands for 5 bucks” concert structure, we are super-psyched for the 12th installment of El Paseo’s Indie Rocks! series and the three killer Albuquerque bands sure to live up to the event’s name. Indie-pop quartet Lousy Robot sounds as if Eels joined forces with The Rentals’ Matt Sharp and The Cars’ Ric Ocasek to create blissfully catchy tunes. If hooks could kill, these dudes would be in big trouble, as their synth-heavy, almost-but-not-quite new wave songs are nothing short of pleasing pop perfection. The Scrams brings the organ to the forefront for post-punk, garage-rock anthems (a Ray Manzarek meets Roky Erickson kind of thing). Expertly using precise vintage tones, The Scrams screams authenticity. Cowpunk trio Suicide Lanes rounds out the show. Created in the early ’80s, the cowpunk subgenre combines country and folk with punk rock for a sound that leans more toward rockabilly and blues than pop/rock. Whatever the subgenre, indie does rock, especially on the cheap.
