An outpouring of support and heartfelt sentiments popped up in early October across social media platforms as soon as news hit that local culture fixture Max Friedenberg had passed. Some knew him as the dedicated artistic coordinator at Warehouse 21, others as the co-founder of emerging arts center High Mayhem. Most knew him as a true friend, a defiant ally and a kind soul.

“Max was an incredible artist of many sorts,” W21’s Ana Maria Gallegos y Reinhardt tells SFR. “He was very creative in music, writing, painting and recording; he was a real asset.”

On Friday, the arts scene that he came to love bands together for a special memorial show at W21. Expect performances by D Numbers and Flamingo Pink! among many others.

“He’s gonna be missed by many in this community, intensely,” Gallegos y Reinhardt continues, recalling a particular nickname Friedenberg earned during his tenure at the teen arts hub. “We used to call him ‘Mad Max’ because he was always so hyper-energy—he would get things done.”

Along with the stellar musical lineup, a silent auction including items and services ranging from guitar lessons to a chef’s dinner by SFR contributor Rob DeWalt, will be at hand. All proceeds from the night are set to benefit Friedenberg’s 6-year-old daughter, Maya. Come on, Santa Fe. Let’s get it done.
