Pelvises gyrated, heads banged and hands were stuck on the sign of the horns on Saturday night, as metal/mariachi hybrid
took the Santa Fe Sol stage.
“What’s up Santa Fe, you guys ready to rock?” vocalist Vega De La Rockha asked the packed house. "It’s been a long road, cabrones —this is our first time here.”
The East Los-based quintet delivered mariachi infused renditions of rock anthems like "Hot for Teacher," dedicated to trumpeter El Cucuy’s high school teacher crush (“Those were the best six years of my life,” he said) and Metallica's “Master of Puppets,” which violinist Maximilian “Dirty” Sanchez sung in honor of his former, handsy cellmate.
The set list also included metalfied versions of Vicente Fernández’ “Volver, Volver” and an earworm version of standard “Guadalajara” with chichis replacing every other word.
From hardcore metal fans to mariachi lovers, the band brought out a truly eclectic slice of Santa Fe out in a concert that will be remembered for a long time.
After the concert, promoter Jamie Lenfestey shared his desire to bring back the band over the summer for Heath Concerts' upcoming free Railyard concert series. He also noted the band would make a good addition to the Burning of Zozobra festivities.
We'll drink (some love juice) to that.
