henever Santa Fe-based A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin states his mood as "mischievous," it usually means something great.
In the case of a post on his Not a Blog blog this week titled "Something Old, Something New," that something was a sample chapter from the upcoming and much awaited Winds of Winter tome—the sixth in his epic series on which the HBO series Game of Thrones is based.
"Hiya kids, hiya hiya hiya," GRRM started off. He then went to say the new chapter is "actually an old" one.
"[I]t's new in that it is material that no one
but my editors (well, and Parris, and David and Dan, and a few others) have
ever seen before, but it's old in that it was written a long time ago,
predating any of the samples that you have seen," Martin said, giving a
shout-out to his wife and GoT showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
"The first draft was, at any rate," Martin continued, "I've rewritten it a dozen times since then."
Given the worldwide expectation not just for season four of HBO series, but also the continuation in his Martin's saga, the announcement crashed GRRM's site.
Still, for those hungry for the chapter teaser, it starts a little
something like this:
Winter is indeed coming, kids.
UPDATE 5 pm: site that includes the full excerpt is back up.
