Ad that mocks outdoor education raises hackles

A new Toys "R" Us ad that makes fun of environmental education struck a nerve with the Santa Fe Watershed Association. The local nonprofit is striking back. 

"Isn't there room for both toys and time in the outdoors?" its video on YouTube asks. Watershed Association Director Felicity Broennen says that rather than fume about the toy store video that shows bored kids playing a game called "Name That Leaf," association education director Eileen Everett decided to parody the ad.

"That ad really raised her hackles hard, as it did every outdoor educator," Broennan says. "To me, this is our tiny nonprofit proving this toy megapolis wrong."

Instead of kids who get excited about toys, the youngsters in the nonprofit's video pick up leaves in the driveway and throw toys out of the car windows.

School children from all over Santa Fe take field trips to the city's watershed in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with educators from the watershed association, which also organizes Santa Fe River cleanup events and promotes conservation.
