Dear Superintendent Boyd,
I’m writing to protest the early start date for Santa Fe public schools. I was on elite safari in Africa when I heard the news that you wanted the twins to show up on August 14. Do you know that there is a nine-hour difference between Kenya and Santa Fe? The twins were busy tracking cheetah in a kids camp run by Maasai warrior teens when I told them that our holiday was ruined! The tears! We had planned to recover by touring Turkey through Istanbul, Gallipoli, and the like. Have you seen photos of Ankara? It’s fabulous! The textiles and rugs alone would make you weep. Then we wanted to spend time with my Great Aunt Gabby in Chicago. She was married to the former owner of one of the baseball teams there and a newspaper magnet. The twins need to stick their feet in Lake Michigan and eat at Alinea, which is so much more than a restaurant you know.
My sister Thea in Greenwich is also very upset. Her triplets (adopted) start almost two weeks after Santa Fe. Two weeks. She would love to start after the civil time, Labor Day, and she might hold them until then depending on weather and the traffic to Southampton. We were planning on meeting somewhere for Labor Day and that still might happen if all the decent hotels aren’t booked up already. We were thinking maybe a dude ranch in Montana or Wyoming. The kids simply love animals and fresh air. Some of the nicer dude ranches have spa facilities, which are sorely needed given the dry desert air and cramped airline seats.
Superintendent Boyd, I hope you’ll consider a later start next year. After Labor Day would be best. The kids need time to distress after a rigorous academic year and travel is very educational. The kids get to see how other cultures live which makes them appreciate what we have. Also, by touring, my husband Chip and I fund groups that desperately need income after wars and such. You could consider it community service in a way. Some of our friends do.
I’ll be away on an all-women retreat until September 15. I look forward to your reply after that date.
