SFR has named Santa Fe New Mexican city government reporter Julie Ann Grimm as its new editor.

Grimm has worked at the New Mexican—whose offices are just across the street from SFR's—for a little over 10 years, "which means I've been lurking around City Hall and keeping tabs on taxing, spending and services since before David Coss became mayor," she writes in an email to SFR.

Originally from St. Louis, Mo., Grimm is a graduate of the University of Missouri - Columbia, where she got her bachelor's degree in journalism. After graduating, she moved to New Mexico and spent close to three years working for the Associated Press in Albuquerque.

"I reported from the Sunport on 9/11, covered Janet Reno on a visit to a bat mitzvah and got a lesson from Jane Goodall on howling like a monkey," she writes of her experience with the AP. "Many of my assignments sent me to the far reaches of the state."

In 2003, she moved to Santa Fe and began working for the New Mexican. Although she's spent 13 years in the daily-news industry, she says she's excited to transition to SFR's weekly schedule and "ready for the deep dives and fun-loving stories that the alternative weekly delivers."

Grimm says that under her leadership, readers can expect "to see stories with direct, tangible ties to their lives."

"Together with my new team, I will keep looking for ways to navigate and explain the place we call home," she explains. "For one thing, we'll be giving city residents lots of information about the upcoming high-stakes municipal election."

Grimm replaces outgoing editor Alexa Schirtzinger, who is leaving to pursue a Knight Fellowship at Stanford University. Her first day on the job will be Monday, Aug. 26.
