RIP Fuego Elmo, Hello McGee!

Santa Fe’s Pecos League team unveils new mascot

He was red, furry and war-torn. He was Fuego Elmo, the true star of the Santa Fe Fuego’s freshman season.

Donning a baggy Fuego T-shirt the hand-me-down mascot was brought to life by Dominique Romero, a 14-year-old Santa Fe High School varsity cheerleader and sister to No. 13, Jerome Romero.

“There was no one else wanting to be the mascot, so I just jumped in there,” she told SFR last summer.

Thanks to that article, Fuego host mom Yvonne Encinias says, interest in the mascot grew and a clear upgrade was in order.

"You think about Orbit, who has his own followers...people just go to see Orbit, not even caring about the actual team," she tells SFR.

The wheels on her head quickly started turning.

The result? McGee, a fire-breathing dragon sponsored by the eponymous local funeral home who will make its debut during a “Play-a-thon” by the SF Youth Symphony on April 27 at the Plaza.

"He's gonna be very exciting, very ecstatic," Romero, who returns for the 2013 season breathing life into the character says. "He's gonna be a lot more fun. He has a lot more to do than Elmo did."

Expect to hear more about McGee in future issues of SFR. As for the Fuego pros, Encinias asks community members to reach out to via their official website and Facebook pages and show your home team support by sponsoring or hosting a player.
