Last week's American Idol-style Spotlight on Young Musicians, profiled here, produced four prize winners and no tears.
1st prize, $200:
Sonatina for Piano and Violin, op. post. 137, No.1 by Franz Schubert;

Jakob Kaare-Rasmussen, piano
JAKOB KAARE-RASMUSSEN is 12 years old and a 6th grader at Wood Gormley Elementary School. He began playing the piano as a 1st grader and loves the way the piano sounds and feels. Jakob is studying piano with Sergio Rodriguez and he first performed at Spotlight in 2011.
EZRA SHCOLNIK is an 11-year-old homeschooler who was first invited to perform in Spotlight when he was 6 years old. Ezra studies violin with Richard Rood, composition with Karola Obermuller and piano with Criss Jay.
Jakob and Ezra met in SFCA's EPIK Artist Program. They've enjoyed playing chamber music together since 2012.
2nd prize, $100:
Concerto No . 2 in D minor, Opus 22, 3rd Movement by Henryk Wieniawski;
Phoenix Avalon, violin
PHOENIX AVALON, age 12, has been playing the violin for nine years. He studies with Carmelo de los Santos of the University of New Mexico, and, as a recipient of Santa Fe Concert Association’s Davis Award, has been able to study concurrently with Jan Sloman of the Dallas Symphony. In the past year, he attended the Meadowmount School of Music, made his orchestral debut with the Boulder Symphony playing the Bruch Violin Concerto and received “Honorable Mention” in the Music Teachers National Association regionals. The Boulder Symphony has invited him to return as soloist for the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto next season. Phoenix participates in the SFYSA Jazz program, Pro Musica CHAMPS, is a SFCA EPIK Artist, plays with Canticum Novum and attends the Secondary Learning Center part-time. His interests include nature study, snowboarding, theater and gemology.
3rd prize, $50:
Andante and Allegro by André Chailleux;
Na Hyun Park, Saxophone
NA HYUN PARK is 15 and a junior in high school. She took lessons with a teacher for her first two months and has been practicing alto saxophone on her own for a year and a half. She is currently a member of the band at St. Michael's High School.
