Ready, Set, Rhyme

Seth Wilson Gray, a sophomore at V Sue Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, is the newly-crowned New Mexico State Champion poet and will go on to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington DC.

On Sunday, Gray came out on top among 10 other finalists in the New Mexico State Finals, winning $200, a trip to DC for the national finals and $500 worth of poetry books for his school’s library.

Sponsored by New Mexico Arts—a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs—the Poetry Out Loud contest promotes poetry for youth, cashing in on a recent resurgence of slam poetry and rap music. Over 1,300 students in New Mexico alone took part in the competition, being judged on presence, articulation, evidence of understanding and accuracy. The competition not only encourages literary discovery, but also helps students master public speaking and build self-confidence.

Gray competes in the National Finals in Washington DC on April 29 and 30.
