ArtFeast 2013: Sheppherd Leads the Way

This isn’t just runway. ARTsmart, a nonprofit that funds art curricula in the Santa Fe Public Schools—aside from having a catchy name—also serves a pretty decent purpose.

Come Feb. 22, ARTsmart will bestow upon fashion designer Laura Sheppherd the first ever title of Honorary ARTfeast Fashion Celebrity. For those of you drawing a blank, Sheppherd’s been a prevalent designer, showcased at Santa Fe Salon since 2001.

And what makes Sheppherd a notable ARTsmart honoree? Well, aside from being the first, her fashion career started at age 14 with her first concoction, a prom dress. Her pretty-in-pink beginnings catapulted from there: she graduated from New York’s Fashion Institute in 1977, experimented with antique fabrics and design elements and, what the heck, in 1998, she moved to good old Santa Fe.

Open to the public for a hundred bucks a pop, ArtFeast, as the event implies, supplies a feast, a fashion show and a boutique—a triple whammy. 10 percent of the proceeds go to ARTsmart, implementing the visual arts in Santa Fe schools.

For more information on the event, visit artfeast.com or, if you opt to, call 603-4643.
