Day 16 of the legislative session

By Matthew Reichbach
Morning-Word The first salvo in the license battle was fired and while the arguments were different, the result was the same -- a House committee voted to table the repeal of drivers licenses for undocumented workers. The Democrats on the House Labor and Human Resources Committee opposed repealing the 2003 law while Republicans backed it. There were two separate bills, sponsored by Reps Bill Rehm and and Paul Pacheco. Both are Republicans from Albuquerque.

This is not the end of the debate over licenses for undocumented immigrants, however -- there is the likely chance that proponents will attempt to "blast" it out of committee. This would require a majority of the chamber to bring the bill straight to the House floor. This was done in each of the past two years.

The Senate is working on a compromise piece of legislation on the issue.

Note: The New Mexico Telegram is running another fundraiser to help cover the rest of the legislative session. Please consider donating and check that link for more details.
