A former Republican Congressional candidate who was arrested in December for allegedly slashing his primary opponent Janice Arnold-Jones and her husband’s car tires, and then stalking the politician and her family on New Year’s day, has been indicted by a Bernalillo County Grand Jury.
Gary Smith will be arraigned in state district court after being indicted on one count of Aggravated Stalking, two counts of Criminal Damage to Property, and four counts of Injury or Tampering with a Motor Vehicle.
SFR broke the story after obtaining this videotape recorded by Arnold-Jones’ surveillance cameras and talked to Smith on New Year’s day after he was spotted by Jones parked in front of his house after being released in jail.
Smith is likely to face additional indictments this month for allegedly stabbing Rhead and Wanda Story’s car tires. Rhead had been Smith’s campaign manager.
The 65-year-old retired Army soldier is also wanted on fugitive warrants in Texas. An El Paso couple told police there that Smith has been damaging their property since 2008. Like Arnold-Jones, Ken and Ester Propps say they caught Smith in the act using expensive surveillance cameras.
Smith remains behind bars at the Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center.
