PTSD Medical Marijuana Petitioner Not Current UNM Professor, Depsite Saying So In Letter To DOH

By Joey Peters
UNM

Albuquerque Psychiatrist William Ulwelling, who plans to petition the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board to remove PTSD from the state's Medical Cannabis Program, signed a July letter to DOH about his upcoming motion as "Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, UNM School of Medicine." The problem, according to UNM? He's not a current assistant professor.

After SFR published a blog post on Wednesday and Daily Lobo reporter (and former SFR intern) Ardee Napolitano picked it up today (but the hat tip goes to KOB-TV's Peter St. Cyr for his tweet about it a few days before), Ulwelling's signature on the petition raised a red flag for faculty and officials at University of New Mexico's School of Medicine.

"The fact is he's not currently with UNM," Pari Noskin, a program manager at UNM's Department of Psychiatry, tells SFR. "It's a problem because he's saying he's with UNM and he's not."

Noskin did find a contract between Ulwelling and UNM in 2007 as a clinical assistant professor in volunteer faculty, meaning he helped train individuals but did not see patients. That contract ended at the end of the year, and there hasn't been one since, according to UNM.

"To the best of our knowledge there has not been any relations since 12/31/2007," Billy Sparks, a spokesman for the UNM Health Sciences Center, tells SFR, adding that Ulwelling's petition is "in no way" the official UNM position on the matter. "We would hope that he make that correction in future filings.

UPDATE: In a voicemail to SFR, Ulwelling says he began as a UNM clinical assistant professor in 1984. He adds that his records could have lapsed since his semi-retirement a few years ago.

"It's been part of my letterhead since 1984," Ulwelling says.

He adds that his petition has nothing to do with the University of New Mexico.

"The key thing is my paper is not meant to be any sort of official connection to UNM," he says.

Almost sounds political. If you get rid of PTSD patients the MMJ program would get cut in half. Gov. Martinez in the past (when campaigning) has said she does not support the program. Seems a little to convienent

PTSD is just an excuse to suck weed - and act like total jerks. I have yet to meet anyone who claims to have ptsd - that wasn't insane before serving in the miitary. Yomens (secrataries) who never saw action - cry for their psychiatrists, just so they can stay stoned. Sober up and quit sniveling. Medical Marijuana grown in NM is weak and sour - just like the alledged PTSD users ! MJ makes them worse. Constant use makes them psychotic a-holes.

Vet

Thereis Noptsd,

What is your excuse for being and asshole?  I'll bet you never even served in the military!  We owe our Vets more than cutting off their medicine.

Vet, Only poor and ignorant folks go into the military. Rich people don't pay taxes - and they don't serve in the military. The rich get low IQ kids from Mississsippi and New Mexico to killl for them. There's nothing patriotic about dying for "your" country. It's not your country - it belongs to the rich. You are just their pawn. Go smoke some weed and add some more buttons and badges to your low class denim vest and baseball hat. Decorate your wheelchair too, you fool..... Send your kids to war too - You can take your matching wheelchairs down to buy your "medecine" at the DOPE clinic, along w/the other idiots.....

Vet, I'll bet you are a Republican. Probably a Christian too. I am amazed at all the ridiculous/stupid things people believe in New Mexico. This state is overflowing with low IQ homocidal alcoholics - Booze, Guns, Bibles, Broncos, Weed, Lobos - that's all people think about - while the Govenor and Heather Wilson sell out the people (and resources) of New Mexico. This state is DOOMED.........

Thereisnoptsd- You are a sad little man who obviously blames everbody but your self for your miserable life. What have you ever done to serve something other than your self. You are obviously just an angry small person who thinks hatred is intelligence. If this state is so doomed then leave. As to your title of there is no ptsd, it just shows that you have never truly put yourself in a position that is truamatic. You probably have never put yourself in any position that would endanger your precious little mind or body. Sad, that is what you are, sad, angry and empty. Feel free to reply, but I would guess it is just going to be more spewing of empty little words. True political rhetoric requires thought passion and learning. You got the passion part right, failed on the rest.

One last note-Yoeman, and other mispellings should be corrected before you tell others about how smart you are.
