BREAKING: Bruce Bernstein, out of SWAIA

Board announces former Executive Director's departure

By Enrique Limon
Santa Fe Indian Market Hot off the heels of the 91st annual Indian Market, the Southwestern Association of Indian Arts announces via email that they've "decided not to renew SWAIA's three year term contract with Dr. Bruce Bernstein."

The message, sent by Stephine Poston on behalf of the Board, goes on to say that the decision was made today at a special meeting.

"SWAIA is contemplating a different direction for our business model," Poston writes.

"We believe that this new direction requires new leadership to move toward our 95th year and beyond, serving the needs of our Native Artists and  constituents, sponsors, partners, and the larger community that supports SWAIA so generously."

This is Bernstein speaking at SWAIA's annual meeting last year:

That's too bad.  I enjoyed Bruce's term as director...

Some people should never be in charge of other people. With a history of harrassement, discrimination and retaliation he was in this position for far too long.

Bruce was passionate & motivated to make abrupt changes within IM, With introductions of new contemporary directions & youth programs he made great progress.perhaps heavy handed he stepped on some toes but certainly had a style his own. No one I have ever known has walked away from that position with a pat on their back, I suspect its a rough job.
