Just under 5 percent of registered voters in the Santa Fe Public Schools district turned out yesterday to approve property tax-based funding for school construction, repair and infrastructure.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, 2,893 voters voted for the 2-mill levy, and 951 voted against it. The funding will not result in increased property tax levels, and some of the money will go to charter schools.
SFPS Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez posted this thank-you message on the district's website this morning:
I am very grateful to our community for supporting our schools with this very important election. Approval of the 2-mill levy will allow us to continue to properly maintain our facilities, make some very significant technology upgrades, replace our worn-out activity buses, and allow each site to have some funds for furniture, equipment, technology and projects specific to individual school communities.
The law MUST be changed for economy and participation -- and some publicity would help, too -- so that school and muni elections are consolidated. I'd go farther and consolidate with general elections, but that's another story.
