MONDAY: Rally for Choice at Roundhouse

By Alexa Schirtzinger
Abortion T

At 2:30 pm Monday, pro-abortion groups plan to rally outside the state capitol to celebrate the 39th anniversary of the US Supreme Court's landmark decision in Roe v. Wade.

Santa Fe NOW Chapter President Dana Middleton sends this message:

In case you hadn’t heard, this year’s Rally for Choice, in celebration of the 39th anniversary of Roe v Wade, will be held inside the Roundhouse in the Rotunda.  If you can possibly take time out of your busy schedules please come.  With continued assaults on women’s reproductive health all around the country – and in New Mexico, too – it’s more important than ever that we send a message to our legislators and the governor that we will not go back to a time of back alley abortions and lack of access to affordable, safe birth control.

The main challenge to abortion before this year's Legislature is HB 51, called the Parental Notification Rights Act, which requires parents of any minor seeking an abortion to be notified at least 48 hours before the procedure is administered.

The bill was introduced by state Rep. Alonzo Baldonado, R-Valencia, and has the dual support of Gov. Susana Martinez and the state's Catholic bishops.
