Political Blogger and Activist Barbara Wold Passes Away

By Alexa Schirtzinger

Barbara Wold, a local blogger and activist many describe as a tireless voice for change, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18.

According to a bio on the Albuquerque blogging site Duke City Fix, Wold co-founded her widely read blog, Democracy for New Mexico, in 2003. In addition to frequent news updates, the site served as a must-read information hub for members of the New Mexico's media and political circles.

State Sen. Eric Griego, D-Bernalillo, issued this statement at the news of Wold's passing:

“I’m deeply saddened that our friend Barbara Wold passed away on Sunday after a tough and courageous battle with cancer.  As the founder of the Democracy for New Mexico blog, Barb was an influential voice in promoting the progressive cause in New Mexico and helping to rebuild the Democratic Party.

“Barb was a champion among champions for turning Democratic values into action.  With characteristic bluntness and wit, she held elected representatives and the party accountable to live up to Democratic values.  Her strong presence will be greatly missed, and the void she leaves will be hard to fill.

“I offer my deepest condolences to her life partner and my friend Mary Ellen Broderick.”

US Rep. Martin Heinrich also issued a statement via blogger Joe Monahan's site:

I was deeply saddened to learn of Democracy for New Mexico co-founder Barb Wold's passing. We lost a champion of worthy causes and a friend to so many--including myself. Her spirit and fierce commitment to making our community better will be sorely missed. Julie and I will continue to keep her family and life partner, MaryEllen Broderick, in our thoughts and prayers.

According to Duke City Fix, Wold had liver cancer. Below, read the last, poignantly insightful comment Wold posted to her Facebook page on Saturday.
